History
Celtic metal is folk metal with an Irish birth certificate: it grew up in Ireland in the 1990s, fusing heavy metal with Celtic music and bringing in the tin whistle, bodhrán and uilleann pipes. The spark came from England, though. Skyclad's 1990 debut The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth, with "The Widdershins Jig", made an impact on a young Keith Fay, then in a Tolkien-inspired black metal band, Minas Tirith. Fay formed Cruachan in 1992 to fuse black metal with Irish folk, naming the 1970s rock band Horslips as another huge influence, and Cruachan's 1995 album Tuatha na Gael is considered the genre's seminal record. Primordial and Waylander surfaced within about a year of Cruachan. The odd twist is that the style never caught on at home: Ciaran O'Hagan of Waylander reckons even Primordial, Ireland's biggest metal band, would be lucky to sell much more than 500 copies of an album there. Abroad it spread widely, from Eluveitie in Switzerland, who even write lyrics in ancient Gaulish, to Suidakra in Germany, Leah in Canada and Gun Ghaol from Scotland, who sing entirely in Scottish Gaelic, while Spain's Mägo de Oz scored strong chart success at home and in Latin America.
