History
Oriental metal is a branch of folk metal that took shape in the mid-1990s in Israel, Singapore and Armenia, and its pioneers are usually named as the Israeli bands Orphaned Land, Melechesh and Salem, Singapore's Rudra and Armenia's Ayas. Orphaned Land, a progressive metal band formed in 1991, released its first demo in 1993 and the album Sahara in 1994, mixing Arab folk into metal, and it is widely credited with inventing the style. The credit is disputed: Ayas had recordings from 1988 and 1991 with Eastern music already woven into metal. Melechesh started in Jerusalem in 1993 as a black metal band and turned oriental on the 1996 EP The Siege of Lachish, while Salem, formed back in 1985, released Kaddish, a concept album about the Holocaust. Rudra, formed in 1992 and named after the Hindu god of destruction, fused Indian melodies with black and death metal riffs and Sanskrit chants and mantras, a sound that came to be called Vedic metal. The style has since spread well beyond its birthplaces, with Khalas in Palestine, Al-Namrood in Saudi Arabia, Arkan in France and Kartikeya in Russia.
