Style recipe for Suno v5
Neo-Prog
Neo prog rock from the 1980s: layered synths, synth lead solos, string synth pads, theatrical and melancholic in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Neo-prog is the British answer to the question of what progressive rock could be once its first wave had gone quiet. The bands built on early Genesis, Camel and, less directly, Van der Graaf Generator and Pink Floyd, but tightened the songs, cut back on group jamming and put clean, emotional electric guitar solos over keyboards. Digital synthesizers took over from bulky Mellotrons and organs, lyrics turned personal and often dark, and the stage show leaned on theatre and imagery. By 1984 every British neo-prog band had material out: IQ's The Wake, Pallas' The Sentinel and Pendragon's Fly High Fall Far belong to this wave. Only Marillion reached arenas. Their Misplaced Childhood topped the UK albums chart in 1985 and has been called the cornerstone of the whole movement, and the band scored eight top ten UK albums between 1983 and 1994. That success had a cost: a flood of copycat bands built entirely on Marillion's formula. After singer Fish left, Marillion moved away from its early sound. In the 1990s a new crop of bands looked back further to King Crimson and Yes, and some, like Arena, crossed neo-prog with heavy metal.
