History

Genesis began as an English progressive rock band whose songs ran long, changed meter without warning and were built around theatrical narrative, with Peter Gabriel performing them in costume. After Gabriel left, Phil Collins moved from the drum stool to the front, and suites gradually gave way to songs. Follow You Follow Me marked the turn, a short warm love song that brought in an audience the earlier records never had. By the 1980s they were writing pure pop with the musicianship still underneath. Invisible Touch topped the American singles chart on a gated drum sound and a hook that repeats almost without variation, and Land of Confusion set a bleak Cold War lyric against a video of grotesque puppets that ran constantly on television. What carries across both eras is Tony Banks's keyboard voicings, Mike Rutherford holding the bottom, and Collins fitting a progressive player's fills inside pop arrangements. They entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
