Brutal Prog

aggressivemenacingfuturistic160–250 BPM

Technical brutal death metal from the 2000s: seven-string guitars, fretless bass, blast beats, aggressive and menacing in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.

History

Brutal prog is a name Weasel Walter coined for the music of his own band, the Flying Luttenbachers, and it belongs to the Chicago no wave scene of the 1990s. Walter named that scene too: in the early-to-mid 1990s he began calling his bands and the bands they played with Chicago no wave, after New York no wave. The sound, as Pitchfork writer David M. Pecoraro described it, blends punk, jazz, skronk, metal and improvised music. The scene grew around the Wicker Park underground and venues such as the Czar Bar, Milk of Burgundy and the Magnatroid, with Scissor Girls, Trenchmouth, U.S. Maple, Math and Quintron in its orbit. Walter dates its start to a well-attended Czar Bar show on January 29, 1993, with the Flying Luttenbachers, Scissor Girls and Trenchmouth on the bill. On February 11, 1994, the Luttenbachers, Scissor Girls and Math drew 800 people to the Cabaret Metro, a night Walter called a bizarre, improbable high point in the scene's public profile. In 2012 he remastered and edited an audio documentary about those years that Burke Patten had produced in the mid-1990s.
