History

Pink Floyd turned studio technique into a way of writing. They began as a psychedelic London band under Syd Barrett, whose whimsy and collapse shaped both the early singles and, later, their subject matter. The group that carried on after him built long pieces from slow tempos, held chords, tape effects and found sound: heartbeats, cash registers, clocks and spoken voices treated as musical material. The Dark Side of the Moon in 1973 organised all of that around one theme, pressure and the ways it deforms a person, and stayed on the American album chart for the better part of two decades. Wish You Were Here mourns Barrett directly. The Wall pushed the concept album to its limit and turned the concert into theatre, with a physical wall built across the venue. Roger Waters wrote the words and David Gilmour supplied the voice and the guitar sound: few notes, wide bends, a long sustain that sits on top of the band rather than inside it. That tone is what most listeners identify first.
