History
MPB, short for música popular brasileira, is the Brazilian urban popular music that followed bossa nova in the mid-1960s, going back to samba, samba-canção, baião and other regional styles and mixing them with jazz and rock. It leans on harmonic complexity and elaborate, literary lyrics, and its audience was so tied to students and intellectuals that it became known as university music. Television festivals made it. In 1965 Elis Regina sang Edu Lobo and Vinícius de Moraes's “Arrastão” on the Festival de Música Popular Brasileira, and her single became the biggest seller in Brazilian music history up to then; the start of MPB is often dated to that moment. Songs pushed back against the government of the 1960s and 1970s: Chico Buarque's 1970 “Apesar de Você” used an abusive love affair as a metaphor for oppression and escaped censorship for about a year. In the early 1970s telenovela soundtracks full of songs by Elis, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso regularly topped the sales charts. MPB was prized as music for listening, not dancing, though many Jorge Ben Jor songs are dance music. Tropicália and samba rock grew inside MPB, and for Brazilians it remains nossa música, our music.
