History

Chico Buarque writes Brazilian songs that work as literature without giving up the groove under them. The melodies come out of bossa nova and samba, chromatic and conversational, sung in a light voice that never pushes. The weight sits in the words. Construcao follows a construction worker's day and death in lines built to one relentless metrical rule, every phrase landing on the same stress, and Brazilians have argued for decades that it is the finest song the country produced. A Banda made his name much earlier, a plain march about a street band that the whole country was singing within weeks. Calice works by pun, a word meaning chalice that also sounds like an order to shut up, which is roughly how a great deal of his writing got past the censors of the dictatorship years. He writes for the theatre and publishes novels as well, and the songs read exactly the way that background suggests.
