History
Elis Regina Carvalho Costa was born in 1945 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and began singing on local radio and TV as a child, earning her a regional following before she was a teenager. Her first four studio albums, released between 1961 and 1963, made little impact, but her performance of "Arrastão" at the 1965 TV Excelsior festival turned her into a national star almost overnight. Her follow-up album Dois na Bossa reportedly sold over a million copies in Brazil, an unprecedented figure at the time. Regina became a central figure of MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira), moving past the softer bossa nova style with a powerful, dramatic voice, and her 1974 collaboration with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Elis & Tom, is still considered one of Brazilian music's landmark records. Known to collaborators as "Furacao" (Hurricane) for her perfectionism and temper, she recorded around 20 studio albums before her death in 1982 at age 36. In 2013, Rolling Stone Brazil named her the greatest voice in Brazilian music history.
