History

Nara Leão built her sound on understatement: a small, clear, almost conversational voice and a guitar-based simplicity that put the song itself in front. Her family's apartment in Rio de Janeiro was one of the places where young musicians of the bossa nova circle gathered in the late 1950s, which is why she is often called the muse of the movement. Yet when she began recording in the 1960s she chose a wider path. Her debut, Nara, mixed bossa nova with sambas by older composers from the favelas, and she soon turned to socially engaged songs, starring in the protest show Opinião after the 1964 coup. She championed the young Chico Buarque, sang his "A Banda" and later took part in the Tropicália moment, before returning to the bossa nova repertoire on Dez Anos Depois. Listeners recognise her by the cool, unforced phrasing, the absence of vocal display and a repertoire that shifted with her convictions, from intimate bossa to protest song.
