Style recipe for Suno v5
Indie Folk
Indie folk from the 2010s: strummed acoustic, glockenspiel, kick drum stomp, nostalgic and warm in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Indie folk took shape in the 1990s, when musicians from indie rock scenes started writing with folk tools: acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, and lyrics that either turn inward or take aim at society. Ani DiFranco and Dan Bern brought alternative rock into folk, while Elliott Smith and Will Oldham worked its quieter acoustic end. The roots run further back, to Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Nico and Joni Mitchell. In the 2000s labels such as Saddle Creek, Barsuk, Ramseur and Sub Pop carried the style, and Fleet Foxes took it onto the pop charts with Helplessness Blues. In Britain Mumford & Sons toured it through their own Gentlemen of the Road festivals, and the backlash came quickly: Popjustice's Peter Robinson called the scene The New Boring, and a decade later the whole wave was being mocked as stomp clap hey. Comedian Kyle Gordon's song We Will Never Die, recorded as Kody Redwing and the Broken Hearts, spread the scorn wider. The genre outlived the jokes. Around 2020 Taylor Swift made Folklore and Evermore, Phoebe Bridgers released Punisher and Julien Baker's records found a new audience, and Bridgers names Elliott Smith as the root of her own sound.
