Style recipe for Suno v5
Contemporary Folk
Contemporary folk from the 1990s: steel string acoustic, cello, brushed drum kit, warm and intimate in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Contemporary folk grew out of the second folk revival, which began in the cities of the American Northeast after the Second World War, drew in mostly middle-class university students and peaked in the 1960s. Woody Guthrie laid the groundwork in the 1930s and 1940s by singing traditional songs next to his own, and his friend Pete Seeger carried the work on as collector, performer and composer. The sound stayed acoustic: guitar, harmonica, banjo, mandolin, autoharp and fiddle, often with guitars tuned to open keys. Some date the commercial turn to 1958, when the Kingston Trio had a hit with Tom Dooley, and for a few years afterwards this music sat high in the American and British charts. Bob Dylan and Joan Baez put topical protest songs at the center, and Canada answered with Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot. Britain has its own starting point: in 1950 the American collector Alan Lomax met Bert Lloyd and Ewan MacColl, and the London club they opened, the Ballads and Blues, may have been the first folk club in the country. Folk rock, indie folk, folk punk, freak folk and folktronica all branched off from it later.
