History

Shawn Colvin brought a polished, jazz-tinged sophistication to singer-songwriter folk: intricate acoustic guitar voicings, a pure and supple voice and lyrics that look hard at depression, relationships and the stories people tell themselves. Born in South Dakota, she spent years playing in bands and working the folk and club circuits, including New York's songwriter scene, before her debut Steady On was released in 1989. That album, co-written in large part with producer and guitarist John Leventhal, won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. Fat City continued in a more layered, atmospheric direction. Her biggest success came with A Few Small Repairs and its single "Sunny Came Home", a dark, hypnotic story song that won Grammys for Record and Song of the Year and reached a far wider audience than most folk artists ever do. She has also released albums of covers and written a candid memoir about her struggles with depression. A listener recognises her by the rich chiming guitar, the clear, controlled vocals and songs that pair gentle surfaces with troubled undercurrents.
