History

Wardruna play music drawn from old Norse and Nordic tradition, using historical and reconstructed instruments such as the tagelharpe, kraviklyra, goat horns, lur and frame drums, alongside natural sounds like water, wood and stone. The project was founded in Norway in 2003 by Einar Selvik, who had played drums in the black metal scene, with Gaahl and Lindy-Fay Hella among its early voices. Its first major work was the Runaljod trilogy, built on the runes of the Elder Futhark: Runaljod - gap var Ginnunga (2009) opened it, and Runaljod - Ragnarok (2016) closed it, each piece tied to a rune and its meanings. Selvik's music reached a far wider audience through the television series Vikings, which used Wardruna recordings and his compositions. Kvitravn (2021) continued the approach with more focus on animistic themes and the relation between people and nature. A listener recognises Wardruna by slow, deep drumming, drones of bowed lyre and horn, massed chanting, and Selvik's grave voice singing in Norwegian and Old Norse.
