History
Kirsten Bråten Berg is one of the central voices of Norwegian traditional singing, closely tied to the kveding style of the Setesdal valley in southern Norway. Her singing is unaccompanied or sparsely accompanied, built on old ballads, stev verses and religious folk songs, with the ornamented lines and free tonality that set Norwegian vocal tradition apart from Western tuning. She trained as a silversmith and lives in Valle, in the heart of the valley whose repertoire she carries. Min kvedarlund in 1988 is a core document of that tradition. From the 1990s she worked with bassist Arild Andersen's group and increasingly placed her voice in new settings: Frå Senegal til Setesdal brought her together with West African musicians, and later she sang with Wardruna on Kvitravn. She has won the Spellemann award and was made a knight of the Order of St. Olav. She is recognised by a clear, unhurried voice that treats old verses as living speech.
