History

Tenhi play a hushed, pastoral kind of dark folk rooted in the Finnish landscape, sung entirely in Finnish and built mostly from acoustic instruments. The project took shape in the mid-1990s around Tyko Saarikko and developed into a small ensemble, finding its home on the German label Prophecy Productions, which gave it an audience across Europe. Albums like Kauan, Väre and Maaäet define its sound: fingerpicked acoustic guitars, piano, flute, violin and harmonium, soft layered voices and long, unhurried songs that seem to follow seasons rather than verses and choruses. The mood is melancholy but calm, closer to fog over a lake than to the martial or apocalyptic tones common elsewhere in neofolk. Almost nothing here sounds borrowed from rock or metal, and the Finnish language gives the melodies a distinct, rolling cadence. Listeners recognise Tenhi by that intimate, near-whispered delivery and the sense of quiet space around every instrument.
