History
Wovenhand is the vehicle David Eugene Edwards built after 16 Horsepower, and it pushes the same fierce, scripture-soaked vision into darker and heavier territory. The project began in Denver around 2000 as a solo outlet and grew into a full band once 16 Horsepower came to an end. Edwards' voice is still the centre: urgent, incantatory and deeply religious, singing lyrics full of biblical imagery, prophecy and struggle. Early records such as Consider the Birds and Mosaic are built on banjo, mandolin and bandoneon, hypnotic drones and tribal percussion, blending Appalachian folk, Eastern European and Native American influences into something closer to a ritual than a song. Over the following decade the guitars grew louder and the drums heavier, until Refractory Obdurate, released in 2014 on the hardcore label Deathwish, sounded close to post-metal. That shift won Wovenhand a following in metal and heavy psych circles as well as among dark folk listeners. The sound is recognised by its drone, its stamping rhythm and a voice that sounds like it is praying through a storm.
