History

Truncate is the alias of David Flores, a Los Angeles DJ and producer whose records sit at the raw, functional end of techno. He started the project around 2011 to focus on a deeper, stripped-back sound, after earlier releases under the name Audio Injection on labels such as Droid Recordings. Alongside the alias he runs a label also called Truncate, which became known for a strict less-is-more aesthetic: tracks built from a pounding kick, a tight percussion loop and one or two textures that slowly mutate over several minutes. His releases show the method clearly, with grooves designed to lock a dance floor in place rather than build to a big break. The style owes a clear debt to the Detroit minimal school and the loop-based records of the 1990s, updated with a heavy, booming low end suited to large rooms. He became a regular presence in international techno lineups through the 2010s. Listeners know his tracks by their relentless repetition, dry and punchy drums and the way small changes carry a whole track.
