History
Perc is the project of the London producer Ali Wells, one of the artists who pulled British techno back toward noise and aggression in the 2010s. He runs the label Perc Trax, which became a home for harsh, distorted club music, and his own records set its tone. The debut album Wicker & Steel in 2011 mixed pounding four-to-the-floor kicks with metallic percussion, blown-out textures and a bleak, industrial mood, while keeping enough groove to work on a dance floor. The Power and The Glory in 2014 and Bitter Music in 2017 went further, with more space for drones, spoken and shouted voices and passages that sit closer to industrial music and power electronics than to straight techno. Wells has also recorded with Truss as Perc & Truss, a pairing that leans toward heavy, rolling warehouse tracks. His sets and productions helped shape the harder, grittier strand of European techno that grew through the decade. A listener knows Perc by the saturated, clipped kick drum, the clanging metal hits and the feeling that the machines are being pushed a little past what they were built to take.
