History

Triumph built big, arena-sized hard rock out of just three players. The Toronto trio of guitarist and singer Rik Emmett, drummer and singer Gil Moore and bassist and keyboard player Mike Levine formed in the mid-1970s and made its name on the road, with a stage show heavy on lights and pyrotechnics. Two lead voices gave the band its range: Moore took the tougher rockers, while Emmett's high, clear tenor carried the melodic anthems. Emmett also brought a guitarist's curiosity that set Triumph apart from plainer Canadian rock, dropping classical and acoustic interludes between the riffs and playing with a technical polish closer to progressive rock. Songs such as Lay It on the Line, Magic Power and Fight the Good Fight made them a fixture of North American rock radio, and albums like Just a Game, Allied Forces and Never Surrender caught them at their peak. A listener knows Triumph by the uplifting, positive-minded choruses, the clean ringing guitar tones and the sense of three people making a much larger sound.
