History

Silk Sonic is Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak playing seventies soul with no irony and no distance. Their record, An Evening with Silk Sonic, is staged like a live revue: Bootsy Collins introduces the songs, the band plays warm and slightly behind the beat, and the arrangements lean on real strings, muted guitar, Rhodes and a horn section rather than anything programmed. Leave the Door Open is the centrepiece, a slow seduction ballad sung in interlocking falsetto that reaches for Philadelphia soul and the smoother end of early seventies R and B, and it took Record and Song of the Year at the 2022 Grammys. Paak sings and plays drums, which gives the rhythm a looseness a session player would smooth out. The joke, and the appeal, is how seriously they take the format: matching suits, choreography, three minute songs with no wasted bar, and harmony singing that sounds like two men enjoying themselves.
