History
Phuture are credited with the record that gave acid house its name and its signature sound. Acid Tracks, released on Trax in 1987, is built almost entirely from a Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer tweaked in real time, its filter and resonance swept until the line squelches, squeals and bubbles over a relentless drum machine pattern. The Chicago trio, with DJ Pierre at its centre, had been experimenting with the machine, a cheap box designed as bass accompaniment for guitarists, and found that pushing its controls produced sounds its makers never intended. The original version ran for more than ten minutes, Ron Hardy tested it on the dancefloor at the Music Box, and its spread from Chicago clubs to Britain helped ignite the acid house boom of 1988. We Are Phuture and further releases followed. Nearly every acid line in later house, techno and trance descends from this approach. The sound is recognisable at once: a restless, rubbery 303 riff that seems to mutate with every bar while the drums stay locked and unchanging underneath.
