History

Josh Wink is a Philadelphia DJ and producer best known for pushing a TB-303 line into the pop charts. Higher State of Consciousness, released in 1995, starts from a simple breakbeat and a single acid line, then lets the 303's filter open wider and wider until the whole track seems to scream; it crossed from underground clubs into the charts and remains one of the most recognisable acid records of the decade. Wink came up in the Philadelphia scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s and co-founded the label Ovum Recordings with King Britt, which became a base for his own releases and for other house and techno artists. His productions sit between acid, tech house and techno: tight, functional grooves, dry percussion and long builds, often with a playful streak. The album Hearing Is Believing in 1998 showed a wider range, and When a Banana Was Just a Banana in 2009 returned him to the album format after a long run of singles and DJ work. He is recognised by that squealing, ever-rising 303 and the tension it builds.
