History
Paul Johnson is best known for Get Get Down, the 1999 house record built on a looped disco hook and a heavy, slightly overdriven kick that took Chicago's ghetto house sound into clubs and charts across Europe. Born in Chicago, he started DJing as a teenager in the mid-1980s and began producing soon after. In 1987 a stray bullet left him paralysed below the waist, and he went on to work for decades as a DJ and producer from a wheelchair. His discography runs through Dance Mania, the home of ghetto house, and also through labels such as Relief, Cajual, Peacefrog and Defected, which shows how easily he moved between raw jacking tracks and warmer, more tuneful house. Get Get Down reached number one on the Billboard dance club chart and the top ten in several European countries, including the UK. His records are recognisable by chopped disco samples, pumping drums and a loose, playful sleaze that makes them both singable and physical. He died in 2021 from complications of COVID-19.
