History

Milli Vanilli were the most polished pop product Europe exported in the late 1980s: club-tempo dance-pop with big gated drums, hooks stacked in layers, and two photogenic dancers in front of all of it. The records worked. Girl You Know It's True and Blame It on the Rain went to the top in the United States, the ballads crossed into radio formats that normally ignored dance music, and the act took the Grammy for Best New Artist. Then it emerged that the two faces on the sleeve had not sung on the recordings, the award was withdrawn, and the name turned into shorthand for pop fakery for the next thirty years. What tends to get lost is the music, which was expertly made studio pop of its moment: clean synth bass, rimshot-heavy programming, choruses built to survive a bad radio speaker, all assembled in Germany by producers who knew exactly what an American chart wanted. The scandal outlived the songs, but the songs were hits on their own terms.
