History
Debbie Gibson (born Deborah Ann Gibson, August 31, 1970, New York) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who became one of the defining pop stars of the late 1980s. A self-taught pianist from age five, she signed with Atlantic Records as a teenager and wrote, arranged, and largely produced her own material, a rarity for a young pop act at the time. Her 1987 debut album Out of the Blue, released when she was 16, went triple platinum and yielded hits including "Only in My Dreams" and "Shake Your Love." Its single "Foolish Beat" hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the youngest person to write, produce, and perform a number-one single, a Guinness World Record she still holds. Her 1989 follow-up, Electric Youth, produced another chart-topper, "Lost in Your Eyes," and made her the first female artist to simultaneously hold the number-one album and number-one single in the US. She later pivoted to musical theater, starring on Broadway in Les Misérables and Beauty and the Beast.
