History

Milladoiro did as much as any group to turn Galician traditional music into a concert art, playing old dance tunes and airs with the care of a chamber ensemble. Formed in Galicia at the end of the 1970s, the band set gaitas, flutes, whistles, harp, fiddle and bouzouki side by side, and its debut A Galicia de Maeloc in 1979 opened a long run of albums. The name refers to the heaps of stones left by pilgrims on the road to Santiago, a fitting image for a group so concerned with continuity. Milladoiro drew on Galician repertoire as well as medieval and Renaissance sources, and presented Galicia as part of the Celtic Atlantic world. At home they played a role much like The Chieftains in Ireland, and the whole Galician folk revival took them as a model. Records such as Solfafria and Galicia no tempo show the mature sound: layered, carefully voiced arrangements where each melody passes from pipes to strings to flute. The texture is calm and polished, the dance rhythms gentle, and every tune seems to carry some history with it.
