History

Clannad built their sound on Irish traditional song carried into a misty, atmospheric space: layered vocals, many of them in Irish, soft synthesiser pads, harp and gentle rhythm under Moya Brennan's clear, floating voice. The group came from Gweedore in County Donegal, a family band formed around 1970 by the Brennan siblings Máire (Moya), Ciarán and Pól together with their uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan. Through the 1970s they played folk with touches of jazz, and in the early 1980s they moved toward a more ambient, produced sound; Enya, another Brennan sister, sang with them briefly around Fuaim before starting her own career. The breakthrough came with Theme from Harry's Game, written for a television drama, whose haunting Irish-language chorus reached a wide audience in Britain, followed by the music for the series Robin of Sherwood. Magical Ring and Macalla belong to this period. Clannad helped open the way for what later got filed as Celtic new age. A listener recognises them by the echoing stacked voices, the Irish lyrics and the calm, windswept mood.
