History

Carlene Davis is known for a warm, clear alto that carried Jamaican lovers rock before it carried the gospel. Born in Clarendon parish, she moved to England as a teenager and later to Toronto, where she began by recording reggae versions of pop and film songs such as Leaving on a Jet Plane and The Harder They Come. Back in Jamaica from 1980, she became one of the island's leading female voices with Like Old Friends Do, It Must Be Love and Winnie Mandela, and played Reggae Sunsplash. A breast cancer diagnosis turned her toward faith, and the album Vessel marked the change. Her gospel reggae keeps the one drop, the bubbling organ and the easy horn lines of her earlier records, but sets them under testimony and praise, and the single This Island Needs Jesus became an anthem at home. With her husband Tommy Cowan she runs the Glory Music label and a recording studio, and she has served as a church minister of music. The voice is the constant: unhurried, motherly phrasing over a relaxed roots groove.
