History

Ólöf Arnalds sings in a high, unusual, almost childlike voice over sparse acoustic accompaniment, a troubadour style that makes old-sounding songs feel private and strange. Before going solo she studied violin, classical singing and composition in Reykjavík and spent years as a touring member of múm, and she has worked with Björk, Mugison, Skúli Sverrisson and Slowblow. Her debut Við og við (2007) was recorded in an intimate folk manner and, after a UK and US release, drew attention abroad partly through Björk's support, leading to tours with Blonde Redhead, Jonathan Richman and Jeff Mangum. The second album Innundir skinni (2010), produced with Kjartan Sveinsson and Davíð Þór Jónsson, added fuller arrangements and her first English-language songs, including "Surrender" with Björk's voice in the background. Sudden Elevation (2013) followed with songs mostly in English. Listeners recognise her by the fragile, wavering vocal, plucked strings and the sense of a folk song caught in a quiet room.
