History

Mavrin is the band of guitarist Sergey Mavrin, and its sound is built around his playing: fluent neoclassical runs, melodic heavy metal riffs and solos that carry as much of each song as the vocals do. Mavrin had come up through Chorny Kofe and his own group Metallakkord before spending 1987 to 1995 as a guitarist in Aria, the band that defined Russian heavy metal. After leaving Aria he launched his own project, and the band was formally founded in 1998. The early albums, including Skitalets with Artur Berkut on vocals, set out a style that ranged across heavy, power and progressive metal, and Khimichesky Son followed in 2001. Singers changed over the years, with Artyom Styrov serving the longest, alongside Andrei Lefler and later Evgeny Kolchin, but the guitar-first identity stayed constant through Otkroveniye, Moya Svoboda, Protivostoyaniye, Neotvratimoye and Idi i Smotri in 2021. A listener recognises it by Mavrin's lyrical, precise lead guitar.
