History
Kiss formed in New York City in 1973, founded by Paul Stanley (vocals, rhythm guitar), Gene Simmons (vocals, bass), Ace Frehley (lead guitar) and Peter Criss (drums). The band built its sound around glam-infused hard rock but became just as famous for its shock-rock stage show: face paint, fire-breathing, blood-spitting and pyrotechnics, with each member playing a comic-book persona (Starchild, Demon, Spaceman, Catman). Kiss became a pop-culture phenomenon in the mid-1970s, dropped the makeup for a commercially successful "unmasked" era starting with 1983's Lick It Up, then reunited the original lineup with makeup in 1996 for what remains their highest-grossing tour ($143.7 million). The band has earned 30 Gold albums, more than any other American act, and 14 Platinum albums. The four original members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. Kiss played its final show in New York City in December 2023 after a farewell tour that began in 2019.
