History
IU began as a teenage singer in the Korean pop system and became the rare figure inside it who ended up writing her own material and controlling how it sounded. Her voice is light and very precise, with clean diction and an easy top end, and Good Day is the song that made it famous: a bright retro-pop arrangement ending in a three-note climb near the top of her range that became a piece of national shorthand. The later work moved away from that. Palette is closer to a conversation set to a soft, jazz-inflected groove, and Through the Night is almost bare, an acoustic guitar and a vocal kept at the volume of someone singing in the next room. Across the 2010s she also built a parallel career as a television actress, which is unusual in its scale rather than its existence. What identifies her records is restraint: melodies written to sit comfortably in the voice, and production that stays out of the way of the lyric.
