History

Elissa sings Arabic pop at close range. The Lebanese singer built her career on romantic material delivered in a soft, breathy voice that stays quiet where other regional stars push for power, and the arrangements follow suit: strings and oud lines kept warm and unhurried, with only enough rhythm to move a song along. Most of her best known recordings are in Egyptian dialect, which is what carried them across the whole Arabic-speaking market rather than only the Levant. The songs are almost always first person and almost always about wanting someone, the doubt around it, or the aftermath, and the restraint in the singing is what makes them land. Video work matters too: she was one of the artists who treated the clip as part of the release rather than an advertisement for it. Multiple World Music Awards recognised her as the best selling Middle Eastern artist of her years. Listeners recognise her by that low, intimate tone and by how little pressure she puts behind it.
