History

TWICE made their name on bright, fast-hooking pop with a gesture attached to almost every chorus. The nine-member group was assembled through a televised trainee competition and broke through with singles that keep the arrangement light: clean synth lines, a shuffling beat, and vocal parts split so finely that a chorus passes through several voices in a few bars. TT is the clearest example, a minor-key chorus paired with a hand sign that spread far past the fan base. Later releases moved away from the cute concept toward something harder and more assertive, with Fancy marking the turn, and The Feels brought a disco pulse and an English lyric aimed at listeners abroad. They built a parallel career in Japan alongside the Korean one, and their albums reached the upper part of the American chart, which few girl groups from Korea had managed. A listener recognises the split vocal and a hook that lands in the first ten seconds.
