History

Inner Circle formed in Kingston and spent years as a working Jamaican band before the international hits, which is audible in the playing: the rhythm section sits deep in the pocket and the arrangements are more polished than roots reggae usually allows. What they arrived at by the late eighties was reggae written for pop radio, with clean guitar skanks, warm keyboard pads, choruses designed to be sung back, and none of the studio roughness that made earlier Jamaican records sound unmistakably Jamaican. Bad Boys is the one everybody knows, largely because an American television programme adopted it as a theme and kept it in front of an audience with no other contact with the genre. Sweat (A La La La La Long) did much the same across Europe, a summer record that stayed on radio for years afterwards. Games People Play shows the band taking someone else's song in the same easy register. Their role was as an entry point, the reggae a great many listeners heard first.
