History
Bob Marley is the writer who carried reggae out of Jamaica and made it a language the rest of the world could use. His songs are built on the one drop: the emphasis falling where a rock drummer would leave a hole, the bass carrying the melody, the guitar answering on the offbeat. Over that unhurried frame he wrote plainly, about poverty in Kingston, about Rastafari, about exile, love and resistance, and the plainness is why the lines travel so well in translation. He grew up in Trench Town, and the sound of that neighbourhood, vocal harmony groups, sound systems and ska speeding up and then slowing down into reggae, is audible in everything he recorded. The posthumous collection Legend became one of the best-selling albums ever made and remains most listeners' way in. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A listener recognises the cracked warmth of the voice and the refusal to hurry a single bar.
