History
Go_A set an open-throated Ukrainian village vocal, the technique singers call the white voice, against club-strength electronic production. The material comes out of the ritual calendar, spring calling songs and wedding laments, and the group keeps the original modes and the hard, unsoftened delivery instead of smoothing them into pop. Underneath sit heavy programmed drums close to drum and bass, a bass line that carries the whole track, and the wooden sopilka flute treated almost as a lead synth. The act was chosen to represent Ukraine at Eurovision with "Solovey", performed "Shum" at the 2021 contest and finished fifth, and the reworked "Shum" went on to top the global Spotify viral chart, unusual reach for a song sung entirely in Ukrainian in a folk idiom. A listener recognises them by the voice first: piercing, nasal in the traditional sense, placed far forward and loud, with almost no vibrato, sitting on top of a rhythm section built for a dance floor.
