History
Milky Chance came out of Kassel with a sound that is easy to describe and hard to copy: a hoarse, half-whispered male voice, an acoustic guitar strummed on the offbeat like a reggae rhythm part, and a programmed kick drum underneath keeping club time. Stolen Dance appeared in 2013, first as a track the duo put out themselves, and it spread through streaming and video before any industry machinery touched it, then went to number one across much of Europe. The two met at school in Kassel and made that first record without a label behind them. Their songs sit in the overlap between singer-songwriter folk and electronic dance production, a lane German listeners started calling folktronica, and the balance rarely tips: the beats stay minimal, the guitar stays dry and acoustic, the vocal stays low in the register and slightly ragged. Later albums widened the palette with more synthesis and more guest singers without changing the core gesture. Anyone who has heard one chorus knows the voice on the next one.
