History
fun. made pop-rock at maximum scale: stacked vocal harmonies, piano and horns arranged like a number from a musical, and a lead voice with a hard nasal edge that cuts through all of it. The songwriting comes out of the American indie and emo scenes of the 2000s, but the production is built for stadiums, drums compressed into a wall and choruses designed so a crowd can shout them back. We Are Young, with Janelle Monae on the bridge, is the song that broke them, a slow anthem that went to the top of the American chart and was played until it became part of the decade's furniture. Some Nights borrowed a marching drum pattern and vocal processing more common in rap records and still worked as a singalong, while Carry On is the straightest ballad of the three. The band took Best New Artist and Song of the Year at the 2013 Grammys, then went quiet, and the sound kept turning up in adverts and trailers for years.
