History
The 1975 build glossy, eighties-facing pop around a band that still plays like a band, chorused guitars, slap-adjacent bass, saxophone where a lesser group would put a synth lead. They came out of Manchester and spent years as a live act before the self-titled album arrived, which is audible in how the songs are arranged for a stage. Matty Healy writes in long, cluttered lines about anxiety, irony and the internet, and the tension between that lyric register and the smoothness of the production is the point rather than a mistake. Somebody Else is the clearest case, a breakup song set to a beat so soft it sounds anaesthetised. Chocolate shows the early guitar-pop version, Love It If We Made It the later one, a list of headlines shouted over a wall of synths. Their albums are deliberately uneven, running ambient interludes and spoken pieces beside radio singles, and that refusal to keep one register is what the audience came for.
