History

Excision pushed dubstep towards pure physical force, treating the bass itself as the composition rather than the support for one. The tracks are organised around sound design: a low frequency pattern that snarls, bends and changes shape every bar, cut with metallic screeches and sudden silence, built at a scale meant for a very large rig rather than headphones. "Robo Kitty" is the calling card, a mechanical growl arranged like a riff, and "The Paradox" applies the same approach with more melody in front of it. Coming out of western Canada, he built an audience through free mixes and constant touring rather than radio, and the live show became the argument: custom speaker stacks, an emphasis on chest-level pressure, visuals cut to every hit. He went on to found the Lost Lands festival, which turned heavy bass music into a destination event in the United States. Producers working in riddim and heavy dubstep still measure their sound design against his records.
