History
Current 93 is the project of David Tibet, formed in London in the early 1980s. It began in the post-industrial underground with harsh tape loops, chanting and noise, alongside Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound and Douglas P. of Death in June. By the late 1980s the sound had turned toward folk: acoustic guitar, piano, bells and drones under Tibet's voice, which moves between fragile singing, recitation and something close to prophetic ranting. His lyrics are dense with Christian mysticism, Gnostic texts, apocalyptic visions, childhood memory and nursery rhyme. Thunder Perfect Mind (1992), named after a Gnostic poem, and Of Ruine or Some Blazing Starre (1994) are often taken as the heart of this period, with Michael Cashmore's guitar and piano giving the songs a mournful English folk grace. All the Pretty Little Horses (1996) is quieter and more devotional, and includes a contribution from Nick Cave. This body of work helped define what came to be called apocalyptic folk. A listener recognises Current 93 by that trembling voice over bare, circling acoustic figures.
