History
Chelsea Wolfe built her sound where gothic folk, doom and drone meet: a hushed, reverb-soaked voice that can sit over a lone acoustic guitar or over a wall of sludgy distortion. She grew up in Northern California and first drew attention around 2010 with lo-fi, home-recorded songs that already mixed folk melody with a heavy, ritual mood. Apokalypsis (2011) sharpened that into something closer to gothic rock and noise, while Unknown Rooms (2012) went the other way, gathering stripped-back acoustic songs. Over the following records she leaned further into metal and electronics, and Hiss Spun (2017) was among her heaviest, built on slow, crushing riffs and thick low end. Her work found listeners in both the indie and metal worlds, and she has collaborated with heavy bands as easily as with folk musicians. What defines her is the contrast between that fragile, spectral voice and the darkness around it, and by songs that feel more like incantations than verses and choruses.
