History

Can built tracks out of playing rather than writing them. The group formed in Cologne around musicians trained in the European avant-garde and a rhythm section able to hold one figure for twenty minutes without drifting, and the method was to record long collective improvisations and edit them down into pieces. The drummer is why it works: a dry, metronomic, endlessly patient pulse that later generations of producers treated as a target rather than a style. Over it the guitar scratches and the bass loops, and the vocals arrive from outside the usual rock register, muttered, chanted or shouted in half-invented language. Vitamin C is the compact version, a bassline and a threat. Halleluhwah is the long version, eighteen minutes on one groove. Spoon shows how commercial the approach could sound when it chose to. Post-punk, industrial, electronic dance music and much of what gets called art rock all trace lines back here.
