History

Bumboks formed in Kyiv in the mid-2000s and built a sound that had almost no competition in the post-Soviet mainstream at the time: funk and soul grooves played by a live band, with hip hop phrasing in the vocal and guitar parts closer to Western rock than to local pop production. The rhythm section sits at the centre, a bass line that carries the hook as often as the melody does, drums played dry and tight, and horns or keys filling the gaps rather than pads. Andriy Khlyvnyuk sings in a conversational, slightly hoarse register, sliding between spoken lines and melody, which is why the lyrics land as speech rather than performance. Vakhteram became one of the most widely heard Russian-language songs of the 2000s across the region, while the Ukrainian-language material such as Kvity v volossi kept the band rooted at home. Their catalogue moves between funk rock, acoustic arrangements and electronics without changing that core voice.
