History
Blackalicious is an American hip-hop duo formed in Davis, California by rapper Gift of Gab (Timothy Parker) and producer/DJ Chief Xcel (Xavier Mosley). The two met as teenagers in Sacramento in 1987 and reconvened in 1992 to launch the group, settling on the name Blackalicious after several earlier iterations. That same year they co-founded the SoleSides collective (later Quannum Projects) alongside Lateef the Truth Speaker, Lyrics Born, and DJ Shadow, a crew credited with shaping underground West Coast hip-hop. Blackalicious built a reputation through the 1995 Melodica EP and the 1999 debut album Nia, blending jazz, funk, and soul-inflected production with Gift of Gab's dense, tongue-twisting rhyme style, showcased on the widely praised single "Alphabet Aerobics." They signed to MCA and released Blazing Arrow in 2002, featuring guests such as Zack de la Rocha and Gil Scott-Heron, followed by The Craft (2005) and Imani Vol. 1 (2015). Gift of Gab died in June 2021, ending the group's three-decade run.
