History
Chance the Rapper, born Chancelor Johnathan Bennett on April 16, 1993, in Chicago, emerged from the city's South Side hip-hop scene in the early 2010s as one of the genre's most prominent independent artists, working outside a traditional label deal. His self-released mixtapes built his reputation: 10 Day (2012), then Acid Rap (2013), which established him as a leading voice in Chicago hip-hop, blending rap with gospel, jazz, and soul influences. His third project, Coloring Book (2016), made history as the first streaming-only release to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, while its single "No Problem" (featuring 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne) won Best Rap Performance. He has also appeared as a featured vocalist on Kanye West's "Ultralight Beam" and DJ Khaled's chart-topping "I'm the One." His debut studio album, The Big Day (2019), reached number two on the Billboard 200; a second album, Star Line, followed in 2025. He holds three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, and received a Primetime Emmy nomination for co-writing a song performed during his 2017 Saturday Night Live appearance.
