History
Badshah works the seam between Punjabi rap and Bollywood party music, and most of his hits are built the same way: a blunt, low-register hook in Hindi or Punjabi, a chant that a room can shout back, and production wide enough for a wedding sound system. He came up in the Delhi rap scene of the early 2010s, writing and producing his own tracks rather than taking beats from film composers, then carried that independent single format into playback work. "DJ Waley Babu" set the template for the Indian club single that arrives without a film attached. "Genda Phool" reworked a Bengali folk refrain into a dance record and became one of the most played Indian songs of its year, while "Paani Paani" pushed the same formula toward a lighter pop finish. What identifies him is the voice, flat and conversational rather than technical, riding four-on-the-floor drums and dhol patterns under a female topline.
