Style recipe for Suno v5
Ratchet Music
Ratchet music from the 2010s: bright saw pluck, booming sub kick, hard finger claps, swaggering and playful in feel. A name-free Suno recipe that reproduces the signature sound without tripping the artist-name filter.
History
Ratchet music is the name Los Angeles producer Mustard, formerly DJ Mustard, gave to his own sound: up-tempo, radio-friendly, club-oriented hip-hop that critics also called rudimentary and melodic. Born in 1990, he first DJed a family party at 11 and built the style with rapper YG, producing every YG mixtape from The Real 4Fingaz on. The breakthrough was Tyga's "Rack City" in 2011, a beat first meant for YG, which reached number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The recipe is easy to hear: a minimalist bass-synth opening, 808 kicks, crisp hand-claps and snap-snares, a background chant of "Hey!" on the off-beats, and the tag "Mustard on the beat, ho!", a sample of YG from "I'm Good", placed across the third and fourth counts before the drop. He built it all in the software Reason. Between 2012 and 2014 the sound spread through 2 Chainz's "I'm Different", Young Jeezy's "R.I.P." and Tinashe's "2 On", and it shaped mainstream and West Coast hip-hop in the early-to-mid 2010s. In 2024 Mustard produced Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us", his first Billboard Hot 100 number one, which won five Grammy Awards.
